Low Vision Driving

Prior to early 2006, the State of Arizona did not permit the use of a Bioptic Telescopic Lens System (BTLS), or Bioptic, to be used while driving. The change in state law allowed individuals previously not independent in their community mobility the opportunity to drive and improve their quality of life. The ability to drive gives people access to better jobs, choice of location for a home and full participation in childrens’ activities and family events.

Driving To Independence is the only adaptive driving school in Arizona performing bioptic driving assessments and training. Our program works closely with optometrists prescribing the BTLS and the initial training in the use of this device. It is ideal for individuals to be trained in the use of the BTLS by a qualified Occupational Therapist or Low vision specialist. This initial training allows the potential driver to be comfortable with the device while stationary and walking prior to use as a passenger and/or driver at these higher driving speeds.

Driving To Independence is able to provide referrals and information regarding optometrists and Occupational Therapists specializing in this area by calling our office.

Requirements for participation in a Bioptic Driving Assessment are similar to other driving assessments. A current and valid driver’s license or permit, referral from the optometrist including current visual acuity and visual fields and recent experience using the Bioptic Telescopic Lens System.

A Clinical Assessment is performed to identify the client’s strengths in the use of the BTLS, driving goals, reaction time, judgment, cognition if necessary and other areas as needed.

An On Road Assessment begins with the client as a passenger and continues as a driver on a specific driving route. This driving route is specific on the client’s level of experience, if they are a novice driver or a recent, experienced driver. Requirements for a bioptic driver are the same as other drivers regarding safety and knowledge of road rules, etc.
