High Tech Driving
High tech driving is a specialized area of adaptive driving to assist individuals with more significant functional limitations. This may include clients with Quadriplegia, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis or other diagnosis affecting upper body function.
This is a highly dedicated area of adaptive driver’s evaluation and requires extensive training for the evaluator to become familiar with the equipment and vehicles available. Ongoing education to maintain this high level of expertise is essential.
Driving To Independence is able to perform high tech driving assessments and training in a wheelchair accessible van with modifications most appropriate to the individual. The primary controls may include computer interfaced equipment utilizing servo motors for acceleration and/or braking, or hydraulic power for acceleration and braking. Additional modifications including steering and braking sensitivity and steering devices are available in this vehicle. The vehicle has a power seat in which to transfer or driving from a power wheelchair is an option.
Secondary control are also addressed during training and recommendations provided to ensure complete interaction with all the vehicles operations.
Requirements for participation in a High Tech Driving Assessment are the same for other driving assessments.
